Clive Fenton

Clive Fenton,

Chief Executive Officer

Clive Fenton joined the Group as Chief Executive Officer in February 2014. He has a wealth of both housebuilding and business experience, having spent almost 30 years with Barratt Developments. He joined Barratt in 1983 and worked in a number of finance and operational roles before being appointed to the Group Board in 2003 with overall responsibility for all operations in the south of England. He was also responsible for group strategic land, partnership housing and retirement homes. More recently he was Chief Executive Officer of Mount Anvil, a development company specialising in the residential property market in central London.

Rowan Baker

Rowan Baker,

Chief Financial Officer

Rowan joined McCarthy & Stone in January 2012 as Group Tax Consultant before becoming Group Financial Controller, playing a lead role in the company’s successful IPO and return to the stock market in November 2015. Before joining McCarthy & Stone, she held various roles in industry and private practice, most notably at Barclays Bank plc and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Rowan is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser, and also holds an MA (Hons) in Law from Clare College, Cambridge.

David Bridges

Group Marketing & Customer Experience Director

David joined McCarthy & Stone in April 2016 to drive effective marketing across the Group as well as a consistent customer experience that reflects the needs of our buyers. David is also responsible for the ongoing improvement of sales operations across the regions. Previously, David was on the board of Linden Homes where he was Business Improvement Director. He also has board level experience with Taylor Wimpey’s UK business and Keepmoat Homes, as well as with other major property businesses in SEGRO and Wates Construction. David started his career at Shell and, prior to entering the property industry, was a successful management consultant as a partner with Deloitte and Chief Executive at a specialist marketing strategy consultancy.

John Tonkiss

Chief Operating Officer

John Tonkiss joined McCarthy & Stone in February 2014 and became a Board Director in October 2015. He previously held the roles of Operations Director – North and Business Transformation Director, and became Group National Operations Director in September 2016. He is responsible for the Group’s nine operating regions and also leads the improvement change programme to accelerate business growth, enhance customer experience and improve operating performance. John was previously Chief Executive Officer of Human Recognition Systems, the UK’s leading biometric solutions provider. Prior to that, he worked for ten years for the Unite Group, the UK’s largest provider of purpose-built student accommodation, becoming Group Chief Operating Officer in 2008. John’s earlier career included senior operational management roles at TRW Automotive Electronics, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers and a number of engineering roles at Lucas Automotive Electronics.


John is not a member of any of the Board Committees.

Paula Jordan,

HR Director

Paula joined McCarthy & Stone in 2008 with an extensive range of HR and business experience through her previous HR Director appointments in the financial services and telecoms industries. Paula is responsible for the delivery of McCarthy & Stone’s people strategy, underpinning and supporting the Group’s ambitious business strategy and growth plans by ensuring that we acquire, develop and retain the best possible talent in the marketplace.

Paul Teverson

Paul Teverson,

Director of Communications

Paul joined McCarthy & Stone in 2011 having previously worked as an adviser to a senior MP and Government Minister in Parliament and provided communications support for a number of the UK housebuilders and national infrastructure companies. Paul was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2014 and is responsible for national, corporate and internal communications, and also supports the company’s national public affairs programme.

Gary Day

Gary Day,

Land and Planning Director

Gary is a Chartered Town Planner and member of the Chartered Institute of Housing and has more than 40 years’ experience in the industry. Gary joined the Group in 1988 having worked in local government for 13 years as a senior town planner. He is currently a member of the Homes and Communities Agency’s Vulnerable and Older People’s Advisory Group and a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care. Over the years he has sat on numerous other groups concerned with the housing implications of the UK’s ageing population. Gary was appointed Land and Planning Director in 2003 and chairs the Group Investment Committee which approves all land buying decisions. He is also responsible for land conveyancing, planning and political and public affairs.

Patrick Hole

Patrick Hole,

Group General Counsel and Company Secretary

Patrick joined McCarthy & Stone in July 2014. He is a qualified solicitor with more than 20 years’ post qualification experience. Patrick has been a partner in private practice for many years and also has a broad range of in-house experience, including interim roles at both DTZ and Keepmoat.
